Revised CPD and recency standards were consulted on (consultation closed 17 July 2026). The 4+2 internship pathway closes: the last day to apply for general registration through it is 30 June 2027. Revised general and provisional registration standards already published by the Board take effect on 1 January 2029.
An applicant for provisional registration holds a four-year accredited sequence of study in psychology completed within the last ten years (or one the Board considers substantially equivalent), is a suitable person, is not disqualified, and meets every other approved registration standard that applies to provisional registration.
- Transcript and testamur for the four-year sequence
- Application declarations and supporting evidence for the other standards
- Qualification older than ten years without re-entry arrangements
- Suitability declaration incomplete
Provisional registration is held because the person needs it to complete one approved program: enrolment in an accredited fifth and sixth (or fifth to seventh) year qualification, a Board-approved 5+1 internship under an approved plan, a Board-approved 4+2 internship under an approved plan, or a Board-specified transitional program. Components of two pathways must not be mixed to make up a six-year sequence, and further training is not accepted as completing an approved pathway.
- Enrolment confirmation or Board-approved internship plan
- Board approval of the transitional program where applicable
- Dual pathway components combined
- Internship started before the plan was approved
Provisional registration is maintained for the entire supervised practice program, including while an application for general registration is being decided; higher degree candidates hold it from the start of enrolment and throughout any component (coursework, placement or thesis) unless granted general registration first. It is renewed every year with a declaration that the person is completing a program that requires it.
- Register history showing continuous provisional registration across the program
- Annual renewal declarations naming the program being completed
- Registration allowed to lapse during thesis writing
- Practice continued after program completion without general registration
A provisional psychologist on the 4+2 pathway completes, over two to five years under a Board-approved plan, the internship hours the definition sets (supervised practice in an approved work role, direct client contact, supervision with a Board-approved supervisor at the ratio required, and professional development), case reports demonstrating the core competencies, and six-monthly supervisor progress reports. The pathway closes for general registration applications on 30 June 2027.
- Internship logbook of hours by category
- Case reports and six-monthly supervisor reports
- Board approval of the internship plan and any extended leave
- Supervision ratio not met in some periods
- Application for general registration planned after the 30 June 2027 cut-off
