Revised CPD and recency standards were consulted on (consultation closed 17 July 2026). The 4+2 internship pathway closes: the last day to apply for general registration through it is 30 June 2027. Revised general and provisional registration standards already published by the Board take effect on 1 January 2029.
A psychologist with general registration develops a learning plan based on a self-assessment of skills and knowledge that identifies areas for development, sets learning objectives and supports life-long learning. The standard does not apply to provisional or non-practising registrants.
- Dated self-assessment and the learning plan it produced
- Plan revisions across the registration year
- Plan written after the activities to fit them
- No link between the self-assessment and the objectives
Complete at least 30 hours of CPD in each 1 December to 30 November period, of which at least 10 hours are peer consultation; a psychologist holding general registration for less than the full year completes 2.5 hours for each full month held, one third of it peer consultation. Activities must be relevant to the area of practice, have clear learning aims, be outcome-focused, maintain competence (and build it where moving into a new area) and contribute to the quality of practice.
- Activity log totalling hours and peer consultation hours for the period
- Pro rata calculation where registration was part-year
- Peer consultation hours short of the minimum
- Activities with no link to the psychologist's area of practice
Maintain an up-to-date portfolio holding the learning plan, a log of every activity, a written reflection for each activity against the development goals, and receipts, invoices or attendance certificates where applicable; keep it for five years; and submit it, with evidence of participation, within 28 days of written notice of audit.
- The portfolio with plan, log, reflections and receipts
- Audit notice and the dated portfolio submission
- Reflections missing for most activities
- Portfolio for earlier years discarded before five years
Commit to the CPD requirements when applying for general registration, declare compliance at each annual renewal (by 30 November), and apply in writing before registration expires for any exemption or variation for exceptional circumstances causing substantial absence from practice (serious illness, injury, bereavement, parental or carer's leave), stating the circumstances and the period affected.
- Renewal declaration
- Written exemption application with supporting documents and the Board's decision
- Exemption requested after registration expired
- Declaration made without a complete log
