Revised CPD and recency standards were consulted on (consultation closed 17 July 2026). The 4+2 internship pathway closes: the last day to apply for general registration through it is 30 June 2027. Revised general and provisional registration standards already published by the Board take effect on 1 January 2029.

G-1Hold the minimum qualification for general registrationsource

An applicant for general registration holds a four-year accredited sequence of study in psychology approved by the Board and completed within the last ten years, or an overseas qualification the Board considers substantially equivalent or based on similar competencies, and has in addition completed a six-year sequence of education and training through one of the approved routes.

Requirement, our statement of the clause

The applicant must be a suitable person to hold general registration, must not be disqualified under the National Law or a co-regulatory jurisdiction's law from applying for or holding registration in psychology, and must meet every other approved registration standard that applies to general registration (criminal history, English language skills, professional indemnity insurance, recency of practice, CPD).

While registered as a provisional psychologist the applicant has completed one of: a Board-approved postgraduate qualification accredited as fifth and sixth years; all fifth and sixth year coursework and practicum of an accredited fifth to seventh year qualification with sufficient progress in the research thesis (certified by the Head of School); an accredited fifth year followed by a Board-approved 5+1 internship; a Board-approved 4+2 internship (closing, see pending changes); or an overseas qualification and supervised practice assessed as substantially equivalent plus a Board-approved transitional program unless exempt.

  • Head of School certification of sufficient thesis progress where the fifth to seventh year route is used
  • Transitional program completion record for overseas-qualified applicants

General registration is renewed every year, and at renewal the psychologist meets the requirements of National Law ss 107 and 109, including the annual statement on each registration standard.
