Psychology Board Code of conduct for psychologists on the standards library
Before providing one service jointly to several clients (for example a couple, family, group or other system), psychologists must consider and record why that mode suits every client involved. Effective practice means the psychologist: (a) takes reasonable steps so that each client consents without undue pressure from the others; (b) takes reasonable steps so that the joint format does not undermine the safety or effectiveness of the service for any client; (c) gives every client a safe and effective service; and (d) respects and protects every client's privacy and confidentiality under the code's other provisions.
- File note recording why joint or group work suits each participant
- Individual consent from each participant, obtained so that no one is pressured by others
- Group agreement on confidentiality between participants
- Screening notes for family violence or coercion before couple or family sessions
- Couple therapy started with no screening for coercive control
- Consent from one partner taken as consent for both
- No written rationale for the joint format
