Good practice means the practitioner: (a) has their own general practitioner or other appropriate practitioner for their health needs; (b) seeks independent, objective advice when they need care and knows the dangers of diagnosing and treating themselves; (c) understands the importance of immunisation and takes precautions to limit the spread of infection; (d) is immunised against relevant communicable diseases; (e) follows state or territory law on self-prescribing if able to prescribe; (f) recognises the effect of fatigue and long hours on their health and ability to care safely; (g) seeks help from a practitioner health program when needed; and (h) does not rely on self-assessment of risk if they know or suspect a health condition or impairment could affect their judgement, performance or patients' health, but consults an appropriate practitioner about whether and how to modify practice, follows that advice, and knows the National Law duty to notify the Boards or Ahpra about certain impairments.
- Staff immunisation record for relevant communicable diseases (for example hepatitis B, influenza, measles)
- Record of treating practitioner advice on fitness to practise where an impairment exists
- Self-prescribing controls where the practitioner can prescribe
