Requirement, our statement of the clause

When teaching or supervising, effective practice means the psychologist: (a) works to develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge that make a teacher or supervisor effective, culturally safe and reflective; (b) oversees supervisees' service-related conduct and gives feedback and guidance as needed; (c) avoids any conflict of interest in a teaching or supervisory relationship that could impair objectivity or harm the learner's outcomes or experience, for example by not supervising someone they already have a service or other relationship with; (d) recognises the power imbalance in teaching and supervisory relationships; (e) models professional and ethical behaviour and keeps appropriate boundaries, which are the teacher's or supervisor's responsibility; and (f) recognises that their supervision must reach the level reasonably expected of a supervisor, and that they may be held answerable for a supervisee's conduct if it does not.

Evidence that typically shows this
  • Board-approved supervisor status and supervisor training records
  • Supervision agreements and session logs with feedback recorded
  • Declaration that no prior service or personal relationship exists with each supervisee
  • Supervisor's oversight notes on supervisee cases
Common gap to check
  • Supervising a friend, relative or former client
  • No written feedback to the supervisee
  • Supervision sessions not logged
