Clients can be put at risk when psychologists fall below the expected standard. Where a risk exists, effective practice means the psychologist: (a) recognises it and acts to reduce it, including by complying with the work health and safety laws of the state or territory; (b) follows section 9.1 if they know or suspect they have a health condition that could impair their judgement or performance; (c) acts to protect clients from harm arising from a practitioner's ill health, conduct or performance (section 9.2); (d) complies with legislative duties, including mandatory notification under the National Law; (e) helps practitioners whose performance or health is of concern to get help; and (f) seeks advice from an experienced practitioner, their employer, their indemnity insurer or a professional body when unsure what to do.

- Record of advice sought (insurer, professional body, experienced practitioner) on a performance or health concern
