Advertising can usefully inform clients but must not be false, misleading or deceptive, and testimonials, especially about the clinical side of a service, can raise unreasonable expectations of benefit or encourage unnecessary use. Effective practice means complying with the National Law (explained further in the National Boards' advertising guidelines) and with Commonwealth, state and territory fair trading and consumer protection law and, where it applies, the law on advertising therapeutic goods, and keeping all promotion of services ethical.
- Advertising review checklist applied to the website, directory listings and social media against section 133 of the National Law and the Ahpra advertising guidelines
- Evidence held for any claim of effectiveness made in advertising
- Record of testimonials removed or reviews not used in advertising
- Clinical testimonials on the practice website
- Unsupported claims of cure or success rates
- Use of titles or endorsement claims the psychologist does not hold
